Global energy needs in the 21st century

Jean-Pierre Revol

CERN

The energy problem is a global problem, which tends to be analyzed from a local point of view only. It is probably one of the most important challenges of the 21st century, and it requires a global response based on a major and diversified R&D programme to develop new energy sources accessible to everyone, anywhere in the world, and acceptable from the environmental point of view. Recent examples of relevant R&D will be reviewed including progress based on the use of particle accelerator technology.
