Superintense laser-molecule interactions

In this theoretical project we are going to study the behavior of matter when subjected to intense (high-frequency) light sources, like e.g. the free-electron laser (FEL). We intend to carry out first-principle nonperturbative calculations for the photoionization and dissociation of one- and two-electron diatomic molecules, by solving numerically, in full dimension, the quantum mechanical time-dependent Schrödinger equation.

We will go beyond the standard approximations, i.e., the frozen-nuclei approximation, the Born-Oppenheimer approximation and the dipole approximation, and explore the behavior of electrons and nuclei as the strong external laser field breaks the chemical bound.

The project can be divided into three parts:
  1. Methodology: Development of efficient numerical algorithms to solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation in full dimension for simple diatomic molecules (like e.g. H2, H2+, D2, D2+, HD+, etc.) interacting with intense laser light sources
  2. Non-Born-Oppenheimer versus Born-Oppenheimer and fixed-nuclei approximation dynamics in molecules
  3. Strong-field ionization dynamics of molecular hydrogen (H2)
This seminar is preceeded by these lectures (link).
